What Is an Internal Audit?

An internal audit is a systematic, documented check that your own organization carries out to see whether its food safety and quality management system is working as intended and meeting its requirements. Done well, it finds problems before your certification body, a customer or a regulator does.

  • Internal

    First-Party Audits

Internal audits your own team conducts on your own site and system. This is what the course prepares you to do.

  • Customer or supplier

    Second-Party Audits

Audits a customer conducts on its supplier, or that you conduct on your own suppliers.

  • Certification

    Third-Party Audits

Independent audits by a certification body, such as an SQF, BRCGS or FSSC 22000 certification audit.

The Seven Principles of Auditing

ISO 19011, the international guidelines for auditing management systems, sets out seven principles that make an audit reliable and useful. They apply whether you're auditing your own site or a supplier.

  • 1

    Integrity

Work honestly, ethically, and responsibly. It's the foundation of professional auditing.

  • 2

    Fair Presentation

Report findings and conclusions truthfully, accurately, objectively, and on time.

  • 3

    Due Professional Care

Apply diligence and sound judgment that match the importance of the audit.

  • 4

    Confidentiality

Protect the information you gain during the audit and use it with discretion.

  • 5

    Independence

Stay impartial and objective, and don't audit your own work where you can avoid it.

  • 6

    Evidence-Based Approach

Base conclusions on verifiable evidence, gathered through appropriate sampling.

  • 7

    Risk-Based Approach

Focus planning, conduct, and reporting on the risks and opportunities that matter most.

This course follows ISO 19011:2026, published in 2026: a technical revision with more guidance on remote and hybrid audits. The seven principles carry over from the 2018 edition.

How Often Do GFSI Schemes Require Internal Audits?

    SQF

Internal audits in full and at least annually, covering all applicable requirements of the Code, with objective evidence recorded and corrective actions taken.

  • BRCGS Food Safety Issue 9

A scheduled internal audit program with audits on at least four different dates spread through the year, with frequency based on risk and past performance. A fundamental requirement.

  • FSSC 22000

    ISO 22000 9.2

Internal audits at planned intervals to check that the food safety management system conforms and is effectively implemented and maintained. FSSC 22000 sites follow it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Internal Auditing Training

What is an internal audit?

An internal audit, also called a first-party audit, is a systematic and documented review your own organization conducts to check whether its food safety and quality management system meets its requirements and is working effectively. It gives you objective evidence of what's working and what needs to be fixed, before an external auditor finds it.

What's the difference between first-, second-, and third-party audits?

A first-party audit is an internal audit of your own organization. A second-party audit is conducted by a customer on its supplier, or by you on your suppliers. A third-party audit is conducted by an independent certification body, such as an SQF, BRCGS, or FSSC 22000 certification audit.

What is ISO 19011?

ISO 19011 is the international standard that provides guidelines for auditing management systems. It covers the principles of auditing, managing an audit program, conducting audits and the competence of auditors, and it applies to both internal and external audits. The current edition, ISO 19011:2026, is a technical revision with more guidance on remote and hybrid audits; the core principles of auditing carry over from the 2018 edition. This course follows the 2026 edition.

What are the seven principles of auditing?

ISO 19011 lists seven: integrity, fair presentation, due professional care, confidentiality, independence, an evidence-based approach, and a risk-based approach. Together they make audit conclusions reliable, objective, and useful to the people who act on them.

How often do GFSI schemes require internal audits?

It depends on the scheme. SQF requires internal audits at least annually, covering all applicable requirements of the Code. BRCGS requires a scheduled program with audits on at least four different dates spread throughout the year, with frequency based on risk and past performance. FSSC 22000 sites follow ISO 22000, which requires internal audits at planned intervals.

Who should attend?

Anyone who conducts or manages internal audits: SQF Practitioners, members of your internal audit team, quality assurance and food safety staff, HACCP team members, and supervisors who are asked to audit other departments. It's also useful for anyone preparing for a GFSI certification audit.

What will I be able to do after the course?

You'll be able to apply the principles of auditing, plan and prepare an audit, gather and verify evidence through interviews, observation, and record review, write clear findings, follow up on corrective actions, and manage an internal audit program.

How is an internal audit different from a certification audit?

A certification audit is a third-party audit by an independent certification body that decides whether you earn or keep certification. An internal audit is your own check of the system, done on your schedule. Because internal auditors work for the organization, independence matters: where possible, auditors shouldn't audit their own work or their own area.

What makes a good audit finding?

A good finding is specific and backed by evidence. It states the requirement, describes what was observed, and explains the gap between the two, so the person responsible can find the root cause and fix it. The course covers how to write findings that lead to effective corrective action.

When is the next session, and how long is it?

The next session is November 5, 2026, from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM Central Time, delivered live online by an instructor. Registration for that class is $500 per seat; 2027 classes are $499 per seat.

Do I get a certificate?
