What Is PCQI Training and Why Do You Need It?

PCQI training certifies you as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual — the person responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing your facility's Food Safety Plan under FDA's FSMA Preventive Controls for Human Food rule (21 CFR 117). If your facility manufactures, processes, packs, or holds human food, federal law requires a qualified PCQI on staff.

PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual): A person who has successfully completed FSPCA-recognized training in the development and application of risk-based preventive controls, or is otherwise qualified through job experience to develop and apply a food safety system. Required under 21 CFR 117 Subpart C.

Kiwa ASI's PCQI Version 2.0 course is updated for 2026 and covers all changes to FSPCA curriculum, including revised hazard analysis approaches, updated FSMA recordkeeping rules, and the latest FDA enforcement priorities. This is not a self-paced video — it's live, interactive training where you work through real scenarios with an experienced instructor.

Whether you're a food safety manager getting certified for the first time, a QA director who needs a refresher on V2.0 updates, or a company sending multiple team members, this course gives you the practical skills to build and maintain a compliant Food Safety Plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About PCQI Training

Common questions from food safety professionals considering PCQI certification.

Is this PCQI training recognized by the FDA?
Yes. This course follows the FSPCA (Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance) standardized curriculum, which is recognized by the FDA as meeting the training requirements for a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual under 21 CFR 117. Your Certificate of Attendance serves as proof of qualification during FDA inspections.
What's the difference between PCQI Version 1.0 and Version 2.0?
Version 2.0 reflects updates to the FSPCA curriculum including revised hazard analysis approaches, updated FSMA recordkeeping guidance, and new FDA enforcement priorities. If you completed V1.0 training previously, V2.0 is recommended to stay current — though your original certification remains valid.
Will my employer and auditors accept this certificate?
Yes. Kiwa ASI is an ANAB-accredited certification body with nearly a century of food safety expertise. Our PCQI training follows the official FSPCA curriculum and is accepted by FDA inspectors, third-party auditors (SQF, BRCGS, FSSC 22000), and employers across the food industry.
How much does PCQI certification cost?
The course is $899 per person, which includes all training materials, access to the Rootwurks interactive learning platform, and your Certificate of Attendance. There are no hidden fees. For groups of 2 or more, contact us at US.Info@kiwa-asi.com for volume pricing.
Do I need to be on camera? What equipment do I need?
Yes, a camera and microphone are required. This is a live, interactive course — not a pre-recorded video. You'll participate in discussions, work through exercises, and collaborate with other attendees. All you need is a computer with a stable internet connection, webcam, and microphone.
What's the cancellation and refund policy?
You can cancel up to 5 days before the course start date for a full refund. If you can't make your scheduled session, you can transfer to a future date at no additional cost. Contact us at US.Info@kiwa-asi.com or call 1-800-477-0778 to reschedule.
How do I access the training platform?
After completing payment, you'll receive an email with your login credentials for the Rootwurks training platform and a Zoom link for the live sessions. All materials are provided digitally — nothing to download or install beyond Zoom.
Does PCQI certification expire?
FDA does not currently require PCQI recertification. However, when the curriculum is updated (as with V2.0), it's strongly recommended to retake the training to stay current with regulatory changes. Your original certificate remains valid, but auditors may ask whether you've completed updated training.
