Safe Quality Food (SQF)

The SQF Institute is a division established by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) to manage the SQF Program. An FMI Advisory Board provides overall policy advice, guidance, and direction to the SQF Institute.

SQF has two codes: SQF 1000 and SQF 2000. SQF 1000 and 2000 are both based on the principles of HACCP. The SQF 1000 Code is for primary producers and the SQF 2000 Code is for the manufacturing and distribution sectors.

Within both codes are three levels of certification. Each level is designed to indicate the stage of development of the producer’s food safety and quality management system. The standard also allows every supplier, regardless of size, to be eligible for certification.

Certification isn’t as simple as calling and scheduling an audit. Company management must make a commitment and then become HACCP educated. Companies must also develop processes, provide documentation, and implement said processes. With all in place, certification is possible.

International Food Standard (IFS)

Because of the globalization of our food suppliers members of the German retail federation (HDE) and members of the French federation (FCD) proposed a quality and food safety standard for food products names the International Food Standard. This standard applies to the post farm processes of food processing. The Italian retail associations joined in 2004 – therefore the IFS Food version 5 is a joint effort of three retail federations from Germany, France, and Italy.

The purpose of the IFS is:
    — to establish a standard with a uniform evaluation system
    — to work with accredited certification bodies and qualified
auditors
    — to ensure comparability and transparency through the entire supply chain
    — to reduce costs and time for suppliers and retailers.

ASI is an experienced IFS audit provider. Contact us for your initial, follow-up, or renewal IFS audit.

British Retail Consortium (BRC) Standards

BRC (British Retail Consortium) Standards are a leading global safety and quality certification program used throughout the world.

The Global Standards are used by suppliers to the global retail industry thus allowing standardization of quality, safety, operational criteria and manufacturers’ fulfillment of legal obligations to provide protection to the consumer.
BRC is composed of seven sections:

    Commitment
    HACCP
    Food safety and quality management
    Site standards
    Product Control
    Process Control
    Personnel

Evaluations usually last about a day and a half and must take place during hours of production. Onsite training can also be scheduled for the same week.
